How does OSU handle cancellations due to weather (rain, thunderstorm/lightning, heat, smoke)?

Snow days - Training sessions will continue as scheduled unless you receive notification of a facility closure. We understand that weather conditions can vary across different areas, so we ask that parents, guardians, and players use their best judgment when deciding whether to travel. If you don’t feel safe making the trip, it’s absolutely okay to stay home. Your safety always comes first.

Thunder - Games will be paused or cancelled due to thunder and lightning. Following Canada Soccer and Environment Canada guidelines, if thunder is heard or lightning is seen, all participants must immediately seek shelter. Matches will be delayed for a minimum of 30 minutes from the last sound of thunder or sight of lightning. The referee has the final authority to delay or restart a match to ensure the safety of all players, coaches, and spectators. Rainy Days - Games and training sessions proceed in light to moderate rain. Soccer is an outdoor sport, and players should come prepared for various weather conditions. However, sessions may be delayed or canceled in the event of severe weather, such as thunderstorms or unsafe field conditions. Any cancellations or schedule changes will be communicated to families by email as early as possible.

Extreme Heat - Games may be cancelled due to extreme heat. According to the Extreme Temperature Guidelines, if the temperature is over 28°C or the humidex exceeds 30°C at kick-off, coaches or referees can call for water breaks. Water breaks are mandatory when the temperature exceeds 34°C or the humidex is over 36°C. Matches will be cancelled if the temperature is predicted to be over 37°C or the humidex exceeds 39°C at the time of kick-off. These decisions are based on Environment Canada forecasts and are typically made by noon on game day. For more information, visit https://eosl.ca/extreme-temperature-guidelines/.

Poor Air Quality - Games may be cancelled due to poor air quality. The Eastern Ontario Soccer League (EOSL) follows an Air Quality Policy to protect the health of players, coaches, and officials. If the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) is forecasted at 6 or 7 at game time, water and rest breaks will be added. If the AQHI is 8 or higher, games will be cancelled. These decisions are made by 3:00 p.m. daily and vary by region, depending on local air quality. Updates will be posted on the EOSL website and communicated to teams, clubs, and referees.
